10 Tips for Creating a Laid-Back and Relaxed Wedding

One of the most frequent regrets we hear from newlyweds is that the stress of wedding planning overshadowed what should have been a joyful and relaxed day. More and more couples are realising the importance of being a little selfish when it comes to planning their wedding. Outdated traditions and social expectations can easily drain the fun out of the process, so it’s essential to put yourselves first. Focus on curating a day that truly celebrates your love without causing unnecessary stress.

To help you achieve this, we’ve compiled a list of 10 key considerations for planning your laid back and relaxed wedding day.

1. Choose a Casual Venue

According to Hitched, barns beat out hotels and stately homes as the most popular wedding venue for UK couples in 2023. Maybe it’s the rustic charm, natural surroundings or spaciousness, but it seems to be a popular choice for couples who want to unwind whilst partying with friends and family. They’re also a great option if you want to personalise the space freely, and tend to be a bit more affordable than a traditional venue.

2. Keep the Guest List Intimate

A smaller guest list allows for a more personal and manageable event. Invite close friends and family who make you feel comfortable. Never feel pressured or obliged to invite anybody you don’t want there, whether it’s +1’s, kids, or distant relatives. You might be in for some awkward conversations along the way, but it’s well worth it to keep your day intimate.

3. Simplify the Decor

Use minimal and natural decorations like wildflowers, fairy lights, candles, and simple table settings. Not only will this be on the cheaper side, it will look gorgeous and you’ll be able to take it all home and re-use it. Another great option to consider is DIY decorations, which will add a personal touch without going overboard, as well as give you and your fiancée some fun crafts to do in the lead up to your wedding.

4. Opt for a Relaxed Timeline

Ditch the rigid schedule. Instead, plan for a flowing event where guests can mingle, eat, and celebrate at their own pace. This could include bypassing a set meal time or activities. This is often preferred by guests anyway, and it will take some stress off your plate! You could also consider a brunch or afternoon wedding to keep things light and breezy.

5. Informal Dining

Speaking of food, a great idea is to serve food buffet-style, with food trucks, or a picnic-style spread. Casual fare like BBQ, tacos, or finger foods work well, and you’ll know there will be something for everyone. Grazing tables have been a huge trend recently, too. If you skip the formal, sit-down dinner, people will be able to eat when they feel comfortable as well as mingle with whoever they please.

6. Low-Key Entertainment

It’s not a celebration without music and games, but don’t think this means you need extravagant entertainment. Hire a local acoustic band, or create a playlist of your favourite tunes. Background music sets the tone without overwhelming the event, and you’ll be able to pick songs you love without the price tag of a DJ. In terms of games, fun, low-pressure activities like lawn games (cornhole, giant Jenga) or a photo booth can add to the relaxed atmosphere and will suit all ages and abilities.

7. Personalised Details

Focus on what matters most to you as a couple. If you love a specific hobby, food, or activity, incorporate it into the wedding. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to have a running theme, but it’s nice to look back on in the future if it’s personal rather than generic or following a trend. Consider writing your own vows or asking close friends to share stories during the ceremony.

8. Consider a Micro Wedding

If a big event still feels stressful, consider eloping or having a micro wedding with only your closest loved ones. You could even head to your nearest town hall or registry office to get the formal part out of the way. Follow it up with a casual post-wedding party for friends and family to celebrate with you! Bennetts Willow Barn also host parties and smaller celebrations, so consider us if it’s something that interests you.

9. Skip Traditions You Don’t Care About

Don’t feel obligated to include traditional elements like a bouquet toss, grand entrance, or cake cutting if they don’t resonate with you. Weddings are constantly evolving and couples are putting their own spin on things. Maybe to you this looks like a colourful dress, skipping the first dance or incorporating your dog in the ceremony!

10. Embrace Imperfections

It’s important to accept that not everything will go perfectly. A laid-back wedding is all about enjoying the moment without worrying about small details. For the most part, it’s mistakes and funny anecdotes that make a wedding memorable.

It’s important to keep in mind that your wedding is all about celebrating your love, not pleasing society or guests. Have a good think about what your perfect day would include, and don’t feel pressured or obliged to incorporate things that will only cause you stress.
